Black Bean Burgers

Veggie burgers are probably the best thing that ever happened to me. Kidding but kind of not?

They leave you feeling full, they are tasty, and they are great for dinners, potlucks and summer bbq’s!

I’ve tried the pre-made ones, and although they are definitely good, nothing compares to a homemade patty. My go-to burger to make is this black bean burger paired with a “big mac” sauce. I got the inspiration from Hot For Food’s “Best Damn Vegan Burger”, but changed some of the ingredients to suit my taste preferences. So make theirs or the one I’m about to show you; either way check out their blog because they are the definition of awesome.

My boyfriend and I make these on the regular. He is a true fan. So if you make these and love them then I told you so! If you make them and hate them then… wait no that’s impossible.

Pair with fries, soup, rice or just have it by itself!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 package of Yves Mexican Veggie Ground Round
  • 1 can black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Your favourite bbq sauce

Suggested burger toppings:

  • Bun
  • Sliced tomato
  • Lettuce
  • Pickle
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup

“Big Mac” sauce:

  • 1/4 cup vegan mayo
  • 3 tbsp french salad dressing
  • 1/2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1.5 tbsp dill pickle (chopped very small)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp ketchup
  • Dash of sea salt

Directions:

  1. For the sauce, add all of the ingredients to a medium sized bowl and whisk together. Put it in the fridge for at least 40 minutes before serving.
  2. Heat your coconut oil in a medium sized pan on medium heat. Once melted, add your onion and heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then stir in the sea salt. Cook for another 5 minutes. Then stir in your brown sugar and cook for another 5 minutes.
  3. Add your beans and caramelized onions to a food processor (or blender) and mix until it becomes a thick paste. Don’t blend for too long.
  4. In a large bowl, take your veggie ground out of the package and mash it so that it is in crumbly pieces.
  5. Add your onion-bean mixture, flour, chili powder, cumin and bread crumbs. Mix until all of the flour is evenly throughout.
  6. Form medium sized patties with your hands. I usually get around 5… sometimes 4 and sometimes 6. It all depends on how large or small you want them.
  7. Add the olive oil to a medium sized pan. Fry for 3 minutes on each side. Repeat with the bbq sauce on each side.
  8. Top with a bun, tomato, lettuce, pickles, the vegan “big mac” sauce, and whatever else you’d like! Best. Burger. Ever.
